Duo in for India

India have included MS Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh in their 14-man squad for the first two Tests against South Africa, but young paceman Ishant Sharma has missed out.

India take on the Proteas in the opening Test in Chennai on March 26, and they have given two of their more experienced stars every chance to prove their fitness ahead of the series.

Wicketkeeper and one-day skipper Dhoni is struggling with a sprained finger while Harbhajan has a hamstring injury he picked up on the tour of Australia.

Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Niranjan Shah said that both men will have to prove their fitness before they will make a final decision.

“On the 21st Harbhajan Singh and MSD have to undergo a fitness test subject to which they will be included in the playing XI,” said Shah.

Ishant was a real success in Australia but the toe injury he picked up Down Under has forced him to miss out on the opening Tests against South Africa.

Gautham Gambhir will feel unlucky to also miss out as he was the leading run scorer in the recent CB Series in Australia, but all-rounder Yuvraj Singh keeps hold of his place.

Murali Kartik is in as the third spinner, while Piyush Chawla and Dinesh Karthik are named as reserves in case Dhoni or Harbhajan are ruled out.

India squad: W Jaffer, V Sehwag, R Dravid, S Tendulkar, S Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni, A Kumble (captain), Harbhajan Singh, M Kartik, I Pathan, Sreesanth, RP Singh
